The process of conducting a pre-adoption psychological evaluation is usually dictated by the country where the child currently resides. In most international adoptions a pre-adoption psychological evaluation is required.
Most countries require a personality test, IQ test, and a general screening mental health screening test. Most countries require as part of a pre-adoption psychological assessment, that the psychologist meet with each prospective parent individually, as well as together. Most countries require your home setting be evaluated and you should come equipped with the data from review. All this information will be combined to prepare the assessment. Your agency or lawyer might make additional requests, like neuro-psych testing (i.e., attention, memory, reasoning, etc.) Unless court-ordered, pre-adoption evaluations are not covered by insurance. The cost will vary based on the country’s requirements and if it is a single parent or couples adoption.
